Eel is a great delicacy that can be enjoyed in many ways. In the kitchen at Svea we prepare a long menu for our eel feast, and you will certainly find your favorite on it. This particular feast has a special place in the cuisine of Skåne.
The Eel feast has its origins in the feasts that were historically held during eel meetings. These meetings were what we would today call a tax feast. Historically, eel fishermen gave one-tenth of their catch to the priest or as rent to the land-owner. The word for the feast in Swedish–gille–means payment or compensation,but also a brotherhood or drinking companionship. After WWII the Eel feast became even more festive and was moved to pubs.
